The home economics class this year—along with the senior students–got involved in the J C S P make a book. We chose to look at the foods and traditions relating to Poland as a number of students are Polish.
We gathered all the information we could on food and compiled it into a book
We found that they eat a lot of pork and fish, they have 2 breakfasts in the day , main meal is 2-3pm with a light meal at 8pm
They seem to like sour and pickled foods,-also each region would have variations on a menu for example, if they lived near a forest, they would have access to mushrooms and therefore add them to a dish
We discovered the traditions of Easter and Christmas
At Easter a basket of food is taken to the Church on the Saturday to be blessed –but NOT eaten until Sunday
At Christmas the big meal is on Christmas eve — known as Wigilia but the difference here is
The meal does not start until the youngest child sees the first star, whilst watching outside for same !
Then they start to eat
It was a lovely project to be involved in
It was nice to have the Polish children to verify the information, while the Irish students learned from it also
We also made a large glass painting showing the Polish flag, the logo, a map of Poland and our own school crest.
